LONDON (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden is set to kick off his visit to Britain on Sunday, where he will engage in important discussions with top British officials and address pressing global concerns. One of the key highlights of his trip will be his meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, accompanied by discussions on climate change issues with King Charles. These talks will set the tone for the upcoming NATO summit, a crucial gathering of world leaders.

The White House has emphasized that this visit aims to further strengthen the close relationship between the United States and Britain, both vital allies in various aspects. On Monday, President Biden will make his way to Downing Street to engage in a low-key meeting with Prime Minister Sunak. This meeting marks their fifth encounter in as many months, an indication of the significant collaboration between the two leaders on a multitude of issues, including advanced technologies, clean energy, and critical minerals.

Prime Minister Sunak’s spokesperson has stated that the discussions are likely to encompass the upcoming NATO summit and the ongoing situation in Ukraine. In an official statement released by his office, Sunak emphasized the importance of alliances in the face of new challenges threatening both physical and economic security. He highlighted the United Kingdom’s leading role as Europe’s NATO ally and its significant partnership with the United States in areas of trade, defense, and diplomacy. Sunak’s commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst their struggle and providing them with necessary aid has also been emphasized. It is worth noting that Sunak himself studied at California’s Stanford University and owns a penthouse flat in Santa Monica.

In the context of repairing relations, Prime Minister Sunak has made significant progress in mending the strained ties that developed between the United States and Britain during the tenure of his predecessors, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. The friction stemmed from their tough stance regarding a post-Brexit deal with the European Union and former Prime Minister Johnson’s close association with Donald Trump. However, Sunak’s efforts have paved the way for a renewed cooperation and understanding between the two countries.

Aside from his meeting with Prime Minister Sunak, President Biden will also hold a significant meeting with King Charles at Windsor Castle, located to the west of London. This location is of historical significance as it hosted previous U.S. presidents, such as Barack Obama in 2016 and Donald Trump in 2018. The primary focus of their discussion will revolve around climate change, a topic that King Charles, who has been an ardent advocate for over five decades, feels passionately about.

During a previous encounter at the COP26 U.N. climate summit in Scotland, President Biden commended King Charles for his exemplary leadership on climate issues, expressing the importance of his involvement. The king graciously acknowledged the compliment, stating his gratitude. This forthcoming meeting will provide them with an opportunity to delve deeper into this critical matter.

Following their engagements in Britain, President Biden and Prime Minister Sunak will depart for Lithuania to join other NATO leaders for a crucial summit. Subsequently, President Biden is expected to travel to Helsinki for a meeting with Nordic leaders, furthering the diplomatic efforts and collaborations between the United States and these important nations.
