When it’s hot outside, nothing beats a cold drink to cool down. However, for women experiencing period pain, consuming cold food or drinks during their menstrual cycle may worsen their symptoms. So, should you avoid indulging in those thirst-quenching iced beverages when you’re on your period?

One common belief is that drinking cold beverages can cause cramps during menstruation. Is there any truth to this?

    The Verdict:

    PARTIALLY TRUE

During the monthly menstrual cycle, the body expels blood as the uterus lining sheds. This process is facilitated by a chemical called prostaglandin, which contracts the uterus muscle to break down the endometrium (uterine wall). For some women, this can be a painful experience.

Research suggests that exposure to cold temperatures can lead to the release of more prostaglandins and increased contractions, resulting in intensified period cramps. Therefore, if you suffer from menstrual cramps and enjoy cold drinks, it may be wise to resist the temptation or even avoid them altogether.

While warm water and heating pads have been found to provide relief from menstrual cramps, some women have also reported the benefits of magnesium supplements in relaxing the muscles and alleviating the pain.

It’s important to note that not all women experience menstrual cramps, and the severity of pain varies among those who do.
