KOTA TINGGI: A father of four has been handed an eight-year jail sentence for pleading guilty to robbing and assaulting a senior citizen. Nazry Mohamad Mokhtar, a 37-year-old oil palm plantation worker, entered his plea before Sessions Court judge Hayda Faridzal Abu Hasan on Monday (July 10). The incident took place on July 2 at approximately 12.40pm, where Mokhtar robbed Rahmah Md Johan, a 60-year-old, at her residence in Felda Air Tawar 4. He not only took her gold bracelet but also caused her physical harm, in violation of Section 394 of the Penal Code. This offence carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail, along with a fine and caning upon conviction.
In light of the evidence presented, Judge Hayda Faridzal handed down an eight-year prison term and one stroke of the cane to the accused. Deputy public prosecutors Muhammad Irsyad Mardi and Ahmad Khairuddin Khalid represented the prosecution, while National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Hilmi Sulaiman Salahuddin acted as the defendant’s counsel. Prior media reports highlighted the alarming incident of an elderly woman being attacked by a machete-wielding intruder who broke into her residence in broad daylight within the Felda settlement.
