KUALA LUMPUR: Cyber security is often overlooked, despite Malaysia’s ongoing efforts in digital transformation, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In order to embrace a secure digital future, Anwar emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of cyber security and “cyber hygiene” nationwide, as well as establishing and maintaining secure systems, applications, and infrastructure.

Anwar highlighted the need for a balanced approach, where protective measures are implemented alongside user-friendly systems. He acknowledged that monitoring and detection measures are crucial, but privacy must also be preserved. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof delivered Anwar’s speech during the opening of the Cyber Defence & Security Exhibition and Conference (CYDES) 2023 on July 10.

Anwar stressed the necessity of collaboration among multiple stakeholders, including the government, industry, academia, and civil society, for the successful formulation and implementation of a national cyber security policy. He emphasized that a collaborative approach encourages the sharing of information and knowledge, and, more importantly, builds trust.

“Building and maintaining trust is a continuous effort and a two-way street. We need to trust that technology providers develop and introduce technology without any hidden agenda. Additionally, we want assurance that data in the digital environment remains intact, confidential, and accessible to authorized users,” added Anwar.

In light of this, Anwar highlighted the importance of trust in government policies and strategies, likening digital trust to trust in physical interactions between the government and stakeholders, as well as between governments. He stated that CYDES 2023, themed “Building Cyber Resilience: Safeguarding the Digital Future,” aligns with the principles and goals of the Madani concept, which aims to transform Malaysia into a prosperous and developed country through change, diverse perspectives, and substantive reforms.
